Safer Streets
Let’s get there together
RI Waves is a public awareness campaign working to encourage all road users – pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, skateboarders, and others – to acknowledge one another with a wave.
Waving is a simple exchange. A confirmation that we notice each other before proceeding or crossing – so we can all get to wherever we are going safely.
Working together with cities and towns all over Rhode Island, we’ll reach more and more people and encourage all road users to Stop, Look & Wave. It’s fun and easy to be part of the movement for safer streets.

The roots of the wave
RI Waves was born of the successful Newport Waves which launched in 2015 as the result of several tragic pedestrian deaths in the City. In response, this proactive, positive, friendly and intuitive campaign had people “doing the Newport wave” for safer streets.
In 2018, RIDOT got behind the campaign and helped to bring it statewide.
Both wave campaigns owe their inspiration to “We Wave”, a campaign out of Austin, TX created by the Butler Brothers – who remain friends and supporters of RI Waves. View the original Newport Waves video.
